  • School board. City council. Neighborhood resources. The stuff that decides what your block looks like in five years, covered by people who'll still be here in five years.

  • You are history. So is your grandmother.

    We train you as an oral historian and send you out to interview the people who built this city — elders, organizers, business owners, artists. You run the interview. You hold the recorder. The tape gets transcribed, published, and archived.

  • Most coverage of Newark comes from outside Newark. We wanted to know what changes when residents are trained in community-centered journalism, storytelling, audio narrative, photojournalism and videography.

They showed us how to take pictures in a way that tells a story, and how to create audio narratives by recording and editing sound. Interviewing people in the LGBTQ+ community was eye-opening because it gave me a new perspective on different experiences. More than that, the program made me look deeper into myself and my own background. It helped me see the power of storytelling and how my voice matters."
